Frequently asked questions
Is 20% a good tip at a restaurant?
Yes — 20% is considered the standard "good service" tip in the US. In major cities like New York or Los Angeles, many locals tip 22–25% for good service. For poor service, 10–15% is acceptable. Below 10% sends a message that service was genuinely problematic.
Do you tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Either is acceptable and the difference is small. Most people tip on the pre-tax subtotal, but tipping on the total (including tax) is perfectly fine and makes the math simpler. Our calculator uses the total you enter, so just type whichever amount is on your bill.
How do you split a bill unevenly?
Our calculator splits evenly. For uneven splits (e.g. one person ordered more), calculate the total with tip first, then divide manually based on what each person ordered as a fraction of the total bill.
Should you tip on delivery fees?
Delivery fees go to the platform (DoorDash, Uber Eats), not the driver. Always tip the driver separately — $3–5 minimum or 15–20% of the order, whichever is more. Drivers only receive the tip you leave.
