About the Flesch-Kincaid formula
The Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level formula was developed for the US Navy in 1975 and estimates the US school grade level needed to understand a piece of text. It's based on two factors: average sentence length (longer sentences = harder) and average syllables per word (longer words = harder).
A grade level of 8 means the text is readable by an average 8th-grader. Most newspapers target grade 6-8. Academic papers typically score grade 12+. Plain English guidelines recommend grade 6-8 for general public writing.
